Less, in This Case, is Much Much More

WriteRoom 1.0 is a freeware text editor that's been praised for the way it takes over the whole screen so that you can concentrate on what you're writing. I love this application for some of its other features though.

Call me persnickety but one thing that's always bothered me about TextEdit is the scroll-bar, more specifically, how the gutter for the bar is always present even when there's less than a window full of text showing. WriteRoom 1.0 has a scroll-bar that only appears when the window is scrollable—and only then—when the mouse is moved. Take your hand off the mouse and the scroll-bar fades away. Very cool.

The second thing I love is how the color of the text, and the background, AND the scroll-bar can be permanently configured. Third thing: WriteRoom 1.0 is constantly auto-saving so I can quit it without bothering to name and save what I'm working on.
WriteRoom 1.0's party piece is the fullscreen mode that's easily toggled, just by pressing the escape key. Finally, text from other applications can be selected and, via the Services menu, pasted into writeroom documents for clutter free reading.
So, four or five—in themselves—minor features, combining to make one killer app.
